I recently had the honor of helping to create a new logo for an initiative put forth by #LeadershipOhio which seeks to put out a message of "Uniting Communities in Ohio".
Leadership Ohio will be hosting a series of events across Ohio screening a new documentary “Join or Die” by Delevan Street Films. This initiative seeks to renew and strengthen the social fabric of our society.
This #LogoDesign pays tribute to both the current Leadership Ohio Logo and the State of Ohio Flag. We arrived at this design in four rounds of drafts narrowing the style, elements and colors with each series.
This represents, for me, an opportunity to do good work, but also, to do it for a great cause.
Creating an effective logo is a blend of art and strategy. Here are some fundamental principles to consider:
Simplicity: A good logo is simple and easy to recognize. Avoid clutter; instead, focus on clean lines and clear shapes.
Memorability: Your logo should be memorable and distinctive. It needs to make a lasting impression so that it’s easily recalled by viewers.
Relevance: The design should align with the brand’s identity and industry. It should convey the essence of the business, product, or service it represents.
Versatility: A logo should work across various mediums and sizes. It should be scalable, meaning it looks good on a business card, a billboard, or a mobile app.
Timelessness: Aim for a design that won't become dated quickly. Trendy logos may look great now but could seem outdated in a few years.
Color: Color choices are critical because they can convey emotions and meanings. Ensure that the color scheme works in both color and black and white to maintain versatility.
Typography: If your logo includes text, choose a typeface that complements the design and is legible in different sizes. Custom typography can add a unique touch.
Balance and Proportion: Ensure that all elements of the logo are balanced and proportionate. This creates a visually appealing and cohesive design.
Originality: Strive for a design that stands out from competitors. Avoid clichés and overused symbols in your industry to ensure uniqueness.
Feedback and Iteration: Test your logo design with real users and gather feedback. Be prepared to make revisions based on constructive criticism to refine and improve the design.
These principles form the foundation of good logo design, helping to create a symbol that effectively represents and enhances a brand’s identity.
